Dec 6, 19 | #43 | New Studio Room | Viewer’s Toy Possessive Weimaraner

Length: 1:11:01

Hey everyone…so I’m getting set up for a better broadcast experience. I’m sorry I missed this past Monday and Wednesday. I’m improving the things going on with my vlogs. Better sound quality you’ll hear in tonight’s broadcast. I have a room set up for vlogging and I hope to have owners come in for interviews about their dogs.

You’ll also notice the video quality is better from my new laptop. It’s considerably better than my old desktop and cell phone. That being said, I’m just waiting for one last piece of equipment that will let me go live with a much higher video quality at 4K.

Tonight’s vlog is about these changes and my usual rant ha ha…I then read an owner’s letter to me about her aggressive resource guarding Weimaraner. He was surrendered to his current family after biting a care aid worker in the previous home. He’s bitten all members of her family and a trainer they hired was bitten in the face and almost lost an eye.
It’s actually a tough story they are experiencing. Not because of their dog…but because the issues are so straightforward and clear to me. I start by determining their dog’s root psychological dysfunctions…knowing that allowed me to put together the puzzle pieces of their dog’s dysfunctions…with an easy to apply set of custom crafted training. It’s specific to your dog’s individual, sentient personality.

My accuracy is 100% and with a progress rate of 100%.

I have a 0% kill/medicate rate.

I’ve successfully downtrained the most extremely dangerous Great Dane in North America in 2016/17 that viciously attacked 16 people in New York.

I guarantee every single dysfunctional dog can be downtrained and thus, have a happier Life.

WATCH my interview on Stop Yulin Podcast:

~ Behavioral Euthanasia Is The Professional Scapegoat.
~ Follow Your Dream.

Meet James Tsai, North America’s top canine behavioral expert and founder of Arf Arf Bark Bark Rescue, a registered non-profit foundation advocating animal welfare and modernizing dog training. James has over 1400 days and almost 20,000 hours working alone primarily with extremely dangerous giant dogs. Recognized by the Court of New York to successfully rehabilitate the most extremely dangerous Great Dane (attacked 16 different people) in North America in 2016/2017.

In 2018, Marc Ching’s AHWF asked James for help with Mingki, one of their rescued dogs from S. Korea who was extremely anxious and reactive. Within 36 hours James had Mingki socialized and able to give and receive touch.

MINGKI the Jindo
Mingki was born and raised to be sadistically tortured to death, then eaten. He was cared for by Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, extremely skittish, unpredictable and prolific biter. He was too dangerous for their most experienced fosters. They had no options. Their foundation has rescued over 20,000 dogs…some from extremely horrific and tortuous conditions…this was the one dog they couldn’t train…couldn’t figure out…couldn’t help. Of all the trainers and behaviorists in North America, they reached out to James Tsai for help.
https://arfarfbarkbark.com/jindo-meat-dog/

James talks about his petition to ban dog & cat meat in Canada (which you can still sign and support) and the advocacy work he does with his foundation.

We discuss how James went from being terrified of dogs growing up to becoming North America’s top canine behavioral expert with a 100% accuracy rate. James is able to read a dog’s behaviour at 2/10ths of a second and has a unique gift & ability to connect with dogs.

Fascinating discussion with an equally fascinating individual!

Nov 27, 19 | #41 | Conversation, NOT Talking, With Our Dogs IS Important

~ Conversation Is Very Important With Our Dogs.

I teach my dogs and owners and their dogs how to converse, not talk, to their dog. In a real conversation without extraneous words. To maintain contextual language relative to the rudimentary mind of dogs. Scientist say dogs are like children, and they are right…but they are not recognizing the dog’s primal and predatory nature operates at a blazing speed. It’s an oxymoron of sorts. A quantum process. Thinking as a dog. I talk to them in their established Voice Key. This all combined creates a highly intellectualized connection. I teach owners how to trust their primal intuition…their own predator…to parent their dog like a human surrogate.

I call my dogs in order of seniority. I called Mingki and as he was about to walk past me, I called William. I don’t usually do this but sometimes I’ll interrupt my habitation flow with them, just as I do with seniority. So, Mingki immediately stopped. He heard me call William’s name before he had passed me…and actually thought…that he had made a mistake, thought he was imagining his name had been called, and he made the conscious decision to stop so he would not break the rules.

That is sentience. That is a dog responding to a human’s language…our conversation…of how tightly bonded we are as two beautiful species.

Sidebar…sometimes I call their names out of order to keep them all alert. Habitation Flow as in how we naturally behave with and between and separately from each other…how the dogs are means I must be constantly observing them…watching for negative shifts in their behaviors. When you pay attention to your dogs, you learn to read the tiniest details. This has made me a more observant person.

I drove downtown…I have the windows open and the dogs stick their heads out and everyone ooo’s and ahhh’ at 3 giant dog heads with very adorable Great Dane faces on them…as I wait in traffic, a guy to my right whistles to my dogs. They don’t look at him. The guy keeps whistling and they still don’t look. Then a kid yells out “HI DOGGIES” and they turn their heads. Dogs listen to language. Nowhere in the entire canine species are whistles, clicks, noises used.

This is also why you sometimes see dogs ignore calls to them. Whistles and shouts and so on…but then they respond to a certain stranger’s voice. It’s the dog’s Voice Key. The sound that is most attentive to them…this is the same as to the type of music we like listening to.

VID Dog Training…I never use anything other than human language as described above. I only whistle when I call them to eat, etc…this reinforces clean understanding of recall by exclusive association. Passive training and in-motion training. Takes nothing for the dog to learn and it keeps us alert and more observant of our own surroundings. My observations of dogs and their families…it’s a feeling of being able to know what their dog is thinking and teaching the owners how quickly their dog is actually thinking.

Sidebar…I don’t like to call myself an owner. I am my dogs’ friend and loyal companion. I give to them what they give to me. Respect for each other. Clean Understanding is the same command used to cover variations of circumstances…such as calling your dog inside or calling him to your car. This develops your dog’s mind…to reason…to think.

Have you ever had a relationship where the other person was constantly contacting you. Texting to you, all day, even when they know you’re working? The person that is constantly needing to do everything with you? That is codependency. Your dog follows you into the bathroom…wants to come every time you leave the house. Proof dogs are codependent.

No Vlog tonight (November 25, 2019). I’m sorry everyone, I’m way behind on my work and admin. Again, I’m sorry everyone.

But here’s a video of my beloveds…my dear Nero, my dear Sammie and my dear Tonka their 2nd day together, two years ago, first week of March 2017…and retractable leashes are excellent tools for proficient users. It takes a lot of practice and self-supervision.

Nero Tsai the Great Dane, 140 lbs, 30″ withers, adopted at age 10 years 4 months old. His first 7 years caged for breeding. Then 3 years prong collared outdoors. Dumped at the age of 10 at a shelter to die. Nero was extremely reactive. At his foster parents in Alabama, he dragged an adult from the couch onto the floor, inflicting wounds requiring 67stitches. The photos are graphic. Extremely high risks to humans, primarily men. Yes…Nero has attacked me multiple times. He’s bitten my head engulfing it in his mouth, causing both my temples to bleed.

Sammie Tsai the Formosan Mountain Dog, 28 lbs, double hind leg amputee. Estimated 2 years old in this video. She had been a stray in Taiwan. Hit by a speeding car instantly losing both hind legs by the impact. Sammie almost died 4 times in 3 weeks at the hospital. She arrived in Vancouver very scared and skittish. A difficult circumstance being she had only two legs and knew she could not trust humans much less defend herself. She was quite afraid. We worked on creating and building Trust with Sammie.

Walter Tsai the Great Dane, 183 lbs, 38″ withers. By 19 months of age, he had had 7 different homes. 6 of those homes admitted to severely beating, starving, shock collaring him till he was drooling and quivering in fear, snared, abandoned, he became so stressed, he chewed off portions of his tail, twice. One ‘owner’ beat him so badly in the head, he suffered 20% blindness, 10% hearing loss and slight brain damage. He was deemed extremely dangerous by the Court of New York. Previously called Tonka, he is known to have attacked 16 people there. Once grabbed a shelter worker, dragging her into his kennel inflicting wounds requiring 42 stitches. Turned down by every known PhD behaviorists and master dog trainer in North America…they said they were afraid of Tonka that he would kill them or one of their staff due to his predatorial intent to stalk, trap and kill humans.

Both Nero and Walter deemed extremely male reactive with prejudice. Both extremely dangerous resource guarding with food and toys and raw meat bones. Walter with predatorial intent to stalk, trap and kill humans.

Being the only person in the world to successfully progress the most extremely dangerous Great Dane in North America in 2016/17…successfully downtraining an extremely dangerous 10 year old senior Great Dane every other one of my peers said was impossible…with a disabled tiny dog…all three together…this is what I excel at. Repeatedly. With every single dog I’ve worked with.

I am uniquely gifted with dogs. I do not need to use treats, medication nor restrictive/painful collars. I read dogs at 2/10ths of a second with a 100% success rate.

I’ve turned down 0 dogs.
I’ve recommended 0 dogs to be killed.
I’ve recommended 0 dogs to be medicated.

Nowhere in the entire canine species is food used as a communication tool, much less a reward fiat. In fact, food is a highly guarded resource to which canines will fight to the death to protect…using food with dysfunctional dogs is counter-intuitive…it is rewarding dysfunctional behavior and retards the dog’s emotional and cognitive maturity.

Don’t believe me? Find academic, anecdotal or novel proof otherwise.

I read dogs at 2/10ths of a second.

Nov 15, 19 | #37 | Resource Guarding: Understanding What Food Actually Means To A Dog | Beyond Generalized ‘Fear’ Descriptions
~ Feeding A Resource Guarding Dog Does Not Necessarily Downtrain The Dysfunctional Dog.

Throwing treats is something to avoid doing if your dog is resource guarding or snappy with their mouths.

Hand feeding a resource guarding dog does not guarantee they will be friendly with other dogs or people outside their immediate family.

Dogs that are used to humans and food know there is trust and safety with food.

Dogs watch us for our physical behavior with and around their food.

Labelling a dog ‘hand shy’ is incorrect…it is the dog afraid of being beaten.

The time to stabilize PTSD requires a lot of patience…and being very patient.

====

Annette Miller
How do you help a dog control their emotions? The more excited/anxious the more he continues to work himself into a yapping frenzy.

====

Be highly cautious of ‘operant conditioning’ and various misconceptions…this is based on B.F. Skinner’s soundly debunked theory that has been disproven and decried by the field.

Nowhere in the canine species is food used as a communication device, much less a reward fiat. In fact, food is a highly regarded object that wolves, dogs…lions…will fight to the death over…using it as an anthropomorphic device such as food to address primal behavior is incorrect and unsophisticated.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2223151/

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/adaptive-behavior/201607/where-operant-conditioning-went-wrong

This is clear proof that the ‘science’ is broken. When an entire global field of animal behavior, primarily dogs…is relying on a system that is only 60% successful…so if 6 million dogs are being killed annually…imagine how many can be saved with a science based system that’s 100% successful across the entire spectrum of dysfunctional dogs.

Quotes from US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health:
Famed linguist Noam Chomsky debated Skinner’s theory to which “Chomsky’s review is perhaps the single most influential paper published since Watson’s Behaviorist manifesto”…which…”Chomsky’s paper is considered to be a classic, and is cited as final evidence of the inadequacy of behaviorism as a general framework for animal behavior and human affairs.”

“[Chomsky’s] review of Skinner’s major book … [is] perhaps the most devastating review ever written. … [It] sounded the death-knell for behaviorism” (p. 97). Probably thousands of students in cognitive psychology classes throughout the world have been confronted with Chomsky’s review as conclusive evidence of the case against behaviorism.”

EXCERPT FROM number one Google result for ‘Behaviorism’: https://www.verywellmind.com/behavioral-psychology-4157183
Behaviorism, also known as behavioral psychology, is a theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. Behaviorists believe that our responses to environmental stimuli shape our actions.

The next time you’re having an argument with someone…give them a treat.

Nov 11, 19 | Viewer Questions: Resource Guarding: My Dog Steals Food And Growls At Me

1. Casey Schubert
My great pyrenees puppy is aggressive when I try to take food away that he steals off of the counter. How do I fix this?

Almost Dangerous 120 lb Farm Dog Wants To Attack People & Dogs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tctQNYZor3Y&list=PLK43vpI6h3zbvgcJgLgg_sJx4xta15LBC&index=1

Trading it out with a higher value food item does work, but does that mean that I am teaching him to steal for a treat? Also, when he does snag an item that he wants in the house he will run away, and yes, I do have to go after him. He is only 10 weeks old, and I don’t know if he was always this way. When I do take food items or things he can’t have away, he will bark, growl, snap and lunge at me- I still take it back and tell him to leave it.
I have started carrying a lime slice with me and dropping it occasionally and telling him to “leave it”, when he doesn’t listen he gets a mouth full of lime- I am hoping that he will start to listen and trust that when I drop things that they are not always good.
We also have 4 children, and he will try to jump and snap food out of their hands- I’ve had to put him outside while they eat and he scratches at the slider the entire time, even if he has his food.
I have talked to a few trainers here, but none of them deal with Great Pyrenees.

1. Shannon (former K9 handler)
Anatolian shepherd, 100 lbs, 2 1/2 years old, rescued and have had since 12 weeks. Anatolians are stubborn.
Last night she got into the kitchen, grabbed the butter dish and ate the butter. When I turn the corner I saw it. I went to go get the butter dish, was successful at grabbing the butter dish, she turned around and grabbed my arm with her full mouth.
She did not bite down, which I knew she could but she just held my arm with a full mouth. She is very food motivated.
It is very uncool that this happened. And I realize that a correction should have been done. Coming from the police canine training the correction is usually harsher.
I don’t care if you publicly display how to rectify and I can add comments or whatever but any suggestions?
My roommate and I do train her with love because we realize that it works better with her than my police dog.
My concern is she grabbed my arm and basically told me that she was in charge.

I’m a little bit more relaxed with her in raising her because she almost died so I just give her nothing but love, she listens to my roommate a little more than me because maybe he’s a male.

====

Hi Casey…sounds like he’s learned to make aggressive sounds and behaviors that have stopped you from taking it away from him. Your puppy has learned that if he steals food from the counter, you’ll take it away. By growling, he knows that makes you stay away. This is a natural canine behavior.

First is prevention…knowing that even if you clear the counter, he’ll come sniffing for crumbs. He reinforces his objective to keep sneaking over to the counter when you leave. With this knowledge, keep an eye on him and when he looks like he’s thinking of sneaking over…call his name and engage with him…this will distract and temporarily disengage his objective. This is something to keep practicing.

Second is if your dog is already in the area, immediately order him out in a firm, warning tone. Maintain eye contact and walk over to him to gently move/walk him out of the area.

If your dog already has jumped up and grabbed something…you can try distracting/trading with another toy…provide him with a higher value food item…jingle your car keys or his leash to make him think you are leaving without him.

If those don’t work…my questions would be:

1. Does he growl with any type of food, when you try to take it away
2. What does your dog do when you try to take it away
3. Do you have to chase or walk after him
4. Where does he go when taking the food
5. Does he eat it right there or does he dart away.
6. What have you tried in the past.
7. How long has this been happening.

His growling also indicates he’s not understanding that as his mom, your dog needs to both listen to you…and…to Trust you. He considers taking food from the counter as something he’s been allowed to do. It’s important to be a firm mom.

So the first is always to safeguard the food…you can put large pans and pots in front of the food if you have to step away for a few seconds.

The dogs I work with have a much different opinion about food. They not only guard food…they will come after me as I get close and attempt to chase me away while barking and snapping. It takes a great amount of time to downtrain this predatorial guarding.

1. Jenn Spore
I have a Great Dane that I rescued from Save Rocky The Great Dane Rescue. We are her 4th home. Her name is Abigail.

She is the sweetest thing, but she does get very aggressive from time to time and goes after my Senior Boxer. Sometimes it’s over nothing. We try redirecting and stopping the scuffle before it happens.

She also likes to heard my kids, and has a high prey instinct. We were given very little info about her life before coming to California. The only thing I really know is she used to free roam all day in the yard/land.

I could really use some tips on what to do to help stop this. We are her forever home no matter what…but I want it to be comfortable for all.

Baby is a 3 yr old Chihuahua who lived with elderly owners and lived with 4 other dysfunctional dogs. When I first met Baby she wouldn’t come out of the wire crate she was in. Her owner grabbed her by the neck and pulled her out. She allowed me to pet her without peeing on her owner but she did poop.

Baby hid her face in her blankets every time I spoke to her for the first 2 weeks. She would hide and not come out. I put her in an exercise pen in my living room so she could get used to everything without the opportunity to hide.

Baby is deathly afraid of being walked outside as she is so fearful of everything and everyone except me. She lays on her bed and poops every time someone comes to visit.

1.Sue Palmer
Thank you so much for all that you do with dog’s James. MoMo is a rescue dog from California. She was in a high kill shelter and terrified. They found her in a field. She was not fixed. The first picture is of her when they brought her to the kill shelter.

When I first got her she escaped from our house and I ran after her. When I caught up I swooped her up and she bit me badly on my hand. She has also bitten my adult son badly about six months ago. I have had her for about five years now.

When I take her for a walk she barks at everyone. When they approach her she wags her nub (tail) and wants to make friends. When I took her to the dog park she barked at people and would instigate a fight with other dogs large or small. It was scary. Although I kept going and she calmed down. She loved going to the dog park after awhile. I moved and she doesn’t go anymore.

When if I have to give her a bath we have to sneak around her back to pick her up. She tries to bite us. She can give really nasty bites. Grooming is also nightmare. She is so uncooperative. I persist the result is her fur is a wee bit lopsided lol. When I go to bed she licks the back of my ear and then goes to sleep. It doesn’t bother me although I find it weird. I think she thinks I am her puppy. I don’t know if she ever had puppies though. What does this mean?

When I go to bed and my husband is already in the bed she will growl protecting him. She will do the same if I am in bed and he comes to bed. It’s almost as if she doesn’t recognize us until we are close and stops. If another person comes in she really growls and won’t stop. My son says it is an alpha issue although I don’t know what to do.

Otherwise she is a sweet loving pup. Thank you so much for your help.

Jamie Wozniel
I am a subscriber to your YouTube channel, follow all of your groups on FB & Instagram & shared your page on FB.

I am looking for help with our 2 1/2 year old male Great Dane, Daxton. His is UTD on vaccinations, no medical issues & his thyroid is WNL. We have had him since 8 weeks. Alway had a good life with solid training. In our home, we also have a DM Great Dane, Wyatt (deaf with vision impairments, 1 1/2 year unaltered, we will neuter him in Feb. 2020, rescued him as a pup at 12 weeks), a 6 year old lab & 4 kids, ages 10-20, and 2 adults. All 3 dogs view my Fiancé, Chuck as the leader. The 3 dogs will all pile on the loveseat to be close to him, and follow him around every time he moves throughout the house.

Daxton’s personality seems to be the “protector”of all & “rule enforcer” in our household. He immediately took on the role of “mother hen” when we rescued Wyatt at 12 weeks. He will go & “find Wyatt” (as he is deaf) if it is time for all 3 dogs to come in the house. If Wyatt or one of the kids get too ramped up, Daxton will place himself in between who he is protecting & what he is protecting from. Daxton is always appears to be on alert & watching what is going on, and who is doing what. Overall, he is a loving, happy dane.

1.
85% of the time, Daxton is best friends with our DM, Wyatt. They play well together & co-exist in our home for the most part. Since Wyatt has turned 9-10 months, at times, Daxton will growl at Wyatt when he gets close to him if he is on the couch, on the bed, or on the floor sucking in a blanket. He has even bit Wyatt a few times. As Wyatt is getting older, he at times will stand his ground and occasionally fight back. We have had approximately 10 heated, dog fights between the 2 of them, all started by Daxton. If Wyatt is on the couch, bed, etc first, Daxton will join & lay next to him. But of Daxton was in the spot first, and Wyatt attempts to join him, he will growl, show is teeth & at times snap at Wyatt. Daxton has no issues with our 6 year old lab, whom we have had as a puppy as well.

Daxton as a puppy was well socialized, exposed to many situation, but not confident. He needed to be provided encouragement through situations he was afraid of (leaves blowing outside, new people at times, etc). In training classes Daxton was labeled “reactive”. He would freak out & resist if the trainer would try to take the leash from us to walk Daxton (for recall exercises, etc).

2.
It appears Daxton is showing more anxiety & reactive behaviors as time goes on. Especially with new people coming into our home & with kids. (He was never a fan of kids other than the ones in our home. When he was 6 months, if a child would try to pet him on a walk, Daxton was not comfortable and would growl at them). We often have my 10 & 13 year old kids’ friends over in our home. In the past 6 months, Daxton has attempted to lunge/bite a 13 year old who asked to pet our dogs while we were taking a walk in our neighborhood. He bit a 1 year old, who was visiting with his family (there were a lot of kids, who Daxton did not know, running around in our home at the time). Most recently, he bit a familiar 10 year old neighbor boy (this boy is alway at our house), as he entered our home after ringing the doorbell. The doorbell is a huge trigger for Daxton. We do our best to anticipate & stop the behavior to prevent these situations to keep both Daxton & others safe. In the county where we live, 2 recorded bites (luckily, Daxton’s bites were not recorded to health services) & the dog has to be removed from the county or euthanized.

3.
Daxton is a jealous dog. (I read your blog on jealous dogs…. which we felt fit Daxton to a “T”. If one of the other 2 dogs is getting attention, Daxton will make his way to push the others aside, so he gets pet. Trust me, all 3 dogs are spoiled & get plenty of attention from us.

I am hoping you can help us to help Daxton. His behaviors make us afraid of the results. We love him. And will do whatever it takes to get him in a better place in his mind. We are constantly on guard, watching situations so they don’t escalate between Daxton & Wyatt. Or that Daxton doesn’t bite anyone else. Please send me some good advice.

Melissa Stanley:
Hi James! I am a member of the group and I’ve subscribed to your YouTube channel. Thank you for your helpful and informative videos!! I need some advice for my dog please.

Bauer is a 7 month old male Great Dane currently weighing 90 lbs. We brought him home when he was 14 1/2 weeks old. Our household consists of myself, my husband, our 3 kids, and a 6 year old male chihuahua.

Sprocket, the chihuahua, is the guy in charge. He quickly set boundaries that Bauer obeys. However, Sprocket is an extremely yappy dog who barks at everything! The kids are not with us full time, so there’s lots of moving parts and our household dynamic is constantly changing.

Bauer was diagnosed with colitis about 3 months ago after lots of testing and weeks of diarrhea. He is on Tylan powder 1/8th tsp twice a day. Once he started the meds, he immediately starting gaining weight and thriving again.

My issue with Bauer is that he is quickly getting bigger and I’m finding it harder to manage him on the leash. If he sees someone on our walks then he immediately starts barking and growling at the people. He pulls and lunges to get to them. If a stranger is brave and comes over, he will bark in their face. Once he senses that they’re not a threat then he’ll stop for 15 seconds and then typically start barking in their face again. Then he tends to try to get away, like he seems scared.

We took him and sprocket to the dog park and he did wonderful with the other dogs. He was playing gently with the other dogs. Some more aggressive then he would bully him and I would have to shoo the other dog away. But if a person approached at the park to talk to us he would bark his head off at the person. He has NEVER bit anyone or even nipped ever! But it scares people when he behaves this way. He does “mouth” when he plays which we’re trying to correct.

My goal for Bauer is to be able to go on a leisurely walk. I want him to just relax and enjoy it. He’s constantly scanning the area and on the lookout for a threat and once he’s sees something he doesn’t like I cannot snap him out of it. He’s so focused that he doesn’t hear me. He has learned basic commands such as sit, stay, paw, and down. Thank you for your time.

Member Question:

Hi this is prince, 1 year & 11 months, got him at 6 weeks old. Definitely had separation anxiety – he would dream a lot about running (feet kicking).

He had a lot of sensitivity to chicken so we had to change his food a bunch of times ( fed him raw and he would growl and try to bite us if we came close to his food).

He got mange really bad around 3 months old for almost 2/3 months. We basically stopped all basic training during this time as it was hard to even let him out of a area since his immune system was so weak and he was very irritated. He also had tick fever but caught it luckily in time.

He would sometimes get out of hand and try to bite so we’ve had to pin him down and usually my husband would send him to his kennel and he would growl and show teeth once he gets into it. This started to progress and we just couldn’t understand what was going on and why he was acting this way towards us at times.

We then use to take him out and meet other dogs – he was very timid and scared (even smaller dogs would scare him). We still kept socializing and sooner than later he stayed with another dog for 2 weeks while we went away and had the time of his life(we were told).

We travelled without him twice for 2 weeks in 2018 and once for 4 months (Jan till end of April 19). It was out of choice at the time when we had to leave for 4 months. He stayed with a family member who also had another male pitbull who tried to attack him but nothing happened(that is what we were told). Prince was then separated from the household he was at and stayed at another house(no pets) and with another person he had never met before. He was apparently chained up for the entire time because no one knew how to walk him because of pulling on leash. He was fed his meals and bathed normally. He had interaction with kids sometimes (he loves kids and ladies). We were told he was very timid and scared towards the adults who were taking care of him , the only time he was happy was when the kids would play with him.

When we returned to him end of April; we then found out we were moving back to toronto and we had no doubt he was coming back with us. So we got him neutered this May 2019 and all his shots (rabies etc) his blood work is great except he’s got a little inflammation issues (Vet said nothing to worry about).

He’s now living with me and my husband at our new home hoping to have a better life for all of us and definitely for prince. We have tried bark busters and now training with K9 Obedience. I don’t feel confident these trainor’s understand him are not addressing the behaviours for why it’s happening or even giving us a good enough answer on what we should be doing in those situations.

-He’s now reactive to every dog/animal he sees.
-Aggression towards me but mostly my husband he backs off when he meets Men at first.
-He loves meeting women and kids (gets super happy).
-He’s scared about a lot of things outside or even inside (he will randomly curl his tale inward and tuck his ears back).
-He’s scared of car rides , showers.
-We don’t know which collar to walk him on, every trainer has been saying different things. Also we have a muzzle (to use or not).
-He’s not aggressive about everything only in certain situations with us and that’s what I’m confused about.
-But it does feel like he’s battling with feeling more endangered then feeling safe and confident.

I have had Great Danes for 26 years, my dogs are very smart. I talk to them in complete sentences. They know what I’m telling them. I’m not a social person due to the death of my daughter so my dogs take after me. I didn’t have a problem when I lived in the country.
Since moving in a small town I got another Dane puppy, Kevin I started him on lead when he was small. But I learned of a dog that killed a puppy a street over from me. This dog got loose while I was out training Kevin. So I became very over protective and kept in with me at all times.
My backyard isn’t big so he didn’t get the same training as my other dogs. I have another female Dane and let them out to play but Kevin doesn’t want to go out much. It’s my fault but now he hasn’t seen other people or other dogs except my dogs. I don’t know how he would react to other people or dogs.
I don’t know how he would react so how should I go about introducing him when I have know idea if he would bite them. I am up in age now so I’m not as strong.
Really I like it with just my dogs and me but a friend wants to come in. Should I just not take the chance. My female Dane is protective over me also, but this lady can come in Bella has not bit but she won’t allow her to be close to me.

I have a #Jindo mix, rescued a year ago and now 1.5yrs old. He’s my first dog. Knowing that Jindos have unique behaviors, any general thoughts on the differences in approach and understanding when working with a Jindo

He often doesn’t listen to me. He often will not come when I call his name – at home or outside. When outside on leash, he doesn’t even look up at me when I try to get his attn … unless he knows I have a treat. I read that Jindos have a mind of their own… very independent. So do I accept that he’s just going to have his own mind and do I continue to train him to respond to me using the usual techniques for non-Jindo dogs.

I have a question regarding the proper order to correct your dog.
Is it a quick pull on the leash followed by pulling them back to you for verbal reassurance and a hug. Or do you let them continue to bark and lunge for a minute before pulling them back to you.

Morning James. Is it possible to work on training with more than one dog at a time…I have 3, only one is reactive. Should it always be done one on one.

Members’ Questions From My Reactive Dog Group (anyone can join)
arfarfbarkbark.com/free-help-for-your-dog/

1. Jennifer G. – Hi James. I know you’ve talked about the touching of a dog’s paws being about trust. I can cut my (beagle/corgi) Pearl’s nails, but it’s a major effort (I must get her on her back or side and position her just right).

2. Jennifer G. – I’ve been working hard with Pearl. Today we went to Starbucks with my roommate and she was perfect…no barking or jumping at people.

She was at ease. Then twenty minutes in, I heard dog tags. There was a Rottweiler sitting under a table 30 feet away. Once Pearl heard and saw her, game over.

All her old behaviors came back. Lunging and barking at people, especially men, walking by. She kept staring at the dog, barking. I know training takes time.

I just feel like we took two steps forward and two steps back. I kept reassuring her she was okay. I asked her to stop, kept doing the touches, saying her name.

Should I have introduced her to the other dog? What more could I have done?

3. Monica U. – Todd is so loud, usually. This was a quiet conversation we had this afternoon. He literally TALKS to me, or tries to, ESPECIALLY when I’m telling him, No.

I do not allow this kind of sass from my child, so why am I allowing his, “back-talk”?

Am I co-dependent, as well?

4. Lynnea L. – Hi James, I’m having a hard time getting Dozer to walk. He stops and won’t go. Doesn’t think he needs to listen to me and just wants to go back to the car.

I can’t get him to exercise and he needs to release his energy. Any ideas?
Off leash dog parks not an option.

He got stung by bees a couple times this summer but I don’t think it’s fear nor do I think he’s injured as he has no problem jumping up.

I’m not sure what to do but know he needs to walk as we used to do a lot of it at the beginning of the year.

Things slowed down in the summer as it was too hot for him to go on big walks and now he mostly will barely go on any.

Any tips help. Thank you. Lynnea and Dozer.

P.S…This is us at (the park) today where he’s done the loop multiple times but refuses to leave the parking lot/grass area.

Mingki the Jindo
“Mingki was born and raised to be sadistically tortured to death, then eaten. Of all the trainers and behaviorists in North America, they reached out to James Tsai for help.”

“My husband and I have adopted two beautiful great dane puppies at the end of this April. They are not from the same litter but came to our house on the same day. Maui (tan) is 7 months old and Paris (merle) is 6 months. Both girls are still intact. We have no other pets indoors just three chickens living in the backyard.

Maui was this shy puppy who bonded immediately with my husband and Paris was this happy go luck dare devil significantly smaller, but feisty opposite. Paris was outgoing and friendly, but I had a harder time connecting with Maui. We brought in a dog trainer who suggested I go to puppy school with only Maui to spend some quality time together.

Fast forward 5 months we could use help with the following situations. We understand they are still puppies and nothing is perfect and they are good dogs but due to their size we want to work on things earlier than later.

  1. Potty in the house: We take them out at least four times a day – twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon. They get plenty of exercise in the dog park as well. Maui and Paris stay in a fenced in area in our house, while we are at work. Within the area we have provided a second sleeping location which has stopped the daily total destruction of the pee pads. However, we can be two hours in the dog park and came home and 30min later one pees a lot on the pad or right next to it. They drink a lot and go at least once when outside but at the same time they don’t seem to be holding inside at all. Paris will indicate that she has to go by standing in front of the door. Maui just goes inside when she needs.
  2. Walking on the leash: We have Paris on a gentle leader and Maui on a harness lead. This has already improved the walk. My husband has never had the following issue described. The walk is good until they decide to “play” on the leash and then it is impossible for me to walk them. Maui will prance and make 2 – 3 special strides after which Paris will jump on her and bite her neck and Maui will do the same to Paris. 9 out of 10 times we are fine but if they are not exhausted from the park or didn’t play there enough with each other it will happen. I dont have any footage as it takes all my strength and focus to separate them when it does happen.
  3. Paris barking and skittishness. Paris has turned into this barker, when our neighbors come and go, she sees strangers on a walk or a new dogs in the dog park. She will try to hide behind your legs in the park if she isn’t sure of the dog or owner while Maui most likely plays with the same dogs. Paris has her favorite friends with which she does play very rough. Paris is not confident and very skittish when taken for a walk by herself however, more sure with my husband. Maui and Paris do play very rough as well. Maui’s fur is very, very short and she has always marks as her skin breaks easily. Please help us understand why the former confident puppy is becoming so skittish and Maui is socially blossoming. They both have some separation issues as they have never been on their own in our house by themselves.”

The death of your dog’s sibling needs time to grieve. Grief causes your dog to develop abandonment due to intradependency from the origin of above average codependency.
